What Will You Learn?
Loss and grief are inevitable yet still always immensely challenging aspects of life. When a bereavement happens, no matter whether it was predicted or unexpected, it can be incredibly difficult to process. This course acquaints you with the grieving process and explains how to support someone going through it, exploring the various types of bereavement and advising the specifics of how to help in each situation.
The concepts of grief and bereavement, provide a basic overview of how an individual might experience them.
You’ll explore and identify specific counselling skills used by individuals coping with grief and bereavement. Learn the skills needed to help babies, toddlers, children, adolescents and adults through bereavement, along with how to help someone with diagnosed mental health difficulties work through bereavement.
This course further delves into counselling for sudden bereavement, including loss through suicide. You’ll gain an overview of how an individual may respond and techniques that can help someone through sudden bereavement and violent bereavement. You will also learn ways to counsel an individual through terminal illness bereavement, including, but not limited to, cancer and dementia, and you will look at end-of-life care and how to prepare an individual for this.
Children cope with death in different ways depending on their age. You’ll explore how children of various age groups may respond to a death, how to help them through bereavement and the common symptoms/behaviours that may be apparent. You’ll also learn how to help parents who have lost a child, including loss through miscarriage and stillbirth.
The Grief and Bereavement Counselling Certificate Course details other specific forms of bereavement. You’ll explore techniques to help an individual who is going through pet bereavement and how an individual may be impacted, how someone may be impacted by a sibling bereavement, how an individual may react after a partner/spouse has died, and how a counsellor can help themselves through vicarious bereavement and why they should practice self-care.
The course also takes us through alternative treatments that may be beneficial to help someone through bereavement.
